Netanel handed Rolf his card. Rolf glanced at him, but there was no sign of recognition in his face, none at all.

When he looks at the card he will know, Netanel thought. But Rolf did not look at his card. In fact, there were two cards in his hand, his and Mandelbaum’s, and he did not look at either of them.

The kapo had been too quick to push Netanel forward. Rolf had not had the time to make up his mind. He was already looking over Netanel’s shoulder at the next man. He handed one card to Mendelssohn, the other to the Orphan, without a further glance.

Suddenly Mendelssohn was holding Netanel’s card.

He was tempted to protest. But what would he say? Wait, you have made a mistake? Would he ask Rolf Emmerich, son of a beer carter, major in the Schutzstaffel, for justice? There were no mistakes in here. Whether you lived or died did not matter to anyone else.

The kapos were already hustling him towards the barrack doors. He did not feel the slap of their truncheons on his back. He almost laughed aloud. So much for all his organizing and his Low Number. It all counted for nothing now. He might as well have thrown himself on the wire that first night.
